• Newly Admitted UC Berkeley Student (Freshman/Transfer)

Newly admitted freshmen or transfer students can only take Summer Sessions courses through Freshman/Transfer Edge. Eligible students who have been admitted to UC Berkeley for fall semester must first sign up for Freshman/Transfer Edge through their CalCentral Notifications Tab.

Students enrolled in Freshman Edge can take courses take in Session C and/or Session D. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis.

• Visiting International

Visiting international students are defined as "non-immigrant" visitors who come to the United States temporarily to take classes. A non-immigrant is someone who:

  • intends to stay in the US temporarily
  • does not have US citizenship or legal permanent resident status (a "green card")
  • applies for a visa to be allowed entry into the US

International pre-college/high school students are subject to different deadlines.

Students visiting Berkeley from other UC Campuses will need to apply to Summer Sessions to create a Berkeley student record. You can then add and adjust all Summer Sessions courses through CalCentral.

Berkeley Summer Sessions is open to the general public in the U.S. and around the world who are not students but continuing learners.

• Residential Pre-College/High School Student

Eligible high school students who do not live in the commutable distance within the San Francisco Bay Area can only take Summer Sessions courses through the Residential Pre-College Scholars program offered in Session C and/or Session D.

• Commuter Pre-College/High School Student

Eligible high school students who live in the commutable distance within the San Francisco Bay Area can take select Summer Sessions courses appropriate for high school students.

If you do not reside in the US and will have completed the 10th or 11th grade (but not 12th grade) by the start of summer, you are an International High School Student. Please note that you must be 16 years of age by the start of your program in order to attend Summer Sessions.

• Not Sure of Your Student Type?

If you are a matriculated UC Berkeley student, attending the current spring semester, and will not graduate before summer, you are a Current UC Berkeley Student.

If you are an incoming freshman for the upcoming fall semester, you are a Newly Admitted UCB Student.

If you are an incoming transfer student for in the upcoming fall, you are a Transfer Student.

If you are a non-immigrant visitor who intends to stay in the US temporarily to take classes, does not have US citizenship or legal permanent resident status, and will apply for a visa, you are a Visiting International Student.
If you are a current student at a University of California campus other than Berkeley, you are a Current UC Student.

If you are a current student at an institution other than UC Berkeley or another University of California campus, you are a Visiting Student from Other US College.

If you will have completed the 10th or 11th grade in the US (but not 12th grade) by the start of summer, you are a High School Student. Please note that you must be 16 years of age by the start of your program in order to attend Summer Sessions.

If you have graduated from high school before the start of summer classes and are not an incoming UC Berkeley freshman, you can attend Summer Sessions as an Independent Student.

If you are a high school graduate who is an employee, teacher, member of the community, or don’t fit into one of the categories above, you are an Independent Student.
