Start your time at Berkeley on the right foot! Whether you’re an incoming first-year student or a transfer student, you have the opportunity to get a head start on your Berkeley future. Take a course or two, fulfill requirements, explore campus, and start building community before the fall semester.

Freshman Edge

Incoming first-year students can opt in to Freshman Edge to take courses that fulfill breadth, prerequisite, and major requirements in the summer.

Incoming transfer students can opt in to Transfer Edge to take popular required courses, as well as courses in their major ahead of most incoming students.

How to Enroll

Newly admitted students will need to “opt in” to Freshman Edge or Transfer Edge first via CalCentral before they can enroll.

Explore summer courses on the Class Schedule at classes.berkeley.edu.

Review costs, dates and deadlines, and policies.

Beginning February 2, enroll in classes via CalCentral.

Make payment and/or apply for financial aid (if eligible) and confirm housing plans.

Tuition

$436 per unit for Berkeley undergraduate students.*

Berkeley Summer Sessions charges tuition based on course units. Each course is assigned a certain number of units based on the workload it requires. Generally, one unit = one hour of class per week + two hours of student work per week.
