Student Learning Center (SLC)

Student Learning Center (SLC) offers academic support services, free of charge, to registered Summer Sessions students. Study groups as well as drop-in and by-appointment tutoring services are offered for a wide variety of Summer Sessions courses. These include Biology 1A, Chemistry 1A, 3A & 3B, Physics 8A & 8B, most lower-division Math & Statistics, and Stat 134. In addition, Writing support is available for students with a paper assigned for any Summer Sessions course, including Reading & Composition courses. Study Strategies consultations for time management, reading, test-taking, and other general study strategies are also available to all students. Tutorial services are provided by experienced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as SLC professional staff. The goal of the Student Learning Center is to promote collaborative learning, and to enable students to build on their strengths and refine their understanding of concepts in a positive learning environment. Berkeley Language Center

The Berkeley Language Center is dedicated to the support of language instruction. It offers a variety of services and houses an extensive collection of audio tapes, including programs in 100 languages. Laboratory services include listening and viewing stations, computer labs for class and individual use, and an audio tape lending library. It also provides a recording studio and a tape duplication service. In addition to language instruction tapes, library holdings include archival collections of linguistic fieldwork, and noteworthy University speeches and events. Libraries

Summer Sessions students have full access to one of the finest research libraries in the country. The UC Berkeley library system consists of Doe Library, the Moffitt Undergraduate Library, the Bancroft Library, (which houses rare books and western Americana), and over 20 other libraries serving a range of academic disciplines. The collections of the University Library system include 8 million volumes, 89,800 journal titles, more than 70 million manuscripts, 400,000 maps, and 16,000 videos.

To access the campus libraries, you must be a registered Summer Sessions student with a Summer Sessions Photo ID Cards. Continuing UC Berkeley students may use their spring Photo ID Cards. Collection access, borrowing privileges, and hours of operation vary from library to library. For more information, consult the campus library website and look for informational leaflets at most campus libraries. Leaflets and web pages include maps of the library system, library hours, the Undergraduate's Guide to the Library, guides to research in specific subject areas, instructions on using library databases and accessing library databases from your home or office, and much more. Check also for information on tours of the Main Library. There are also free drop-in classes on finding books, articles, and using the Internet. Computing Facilities

Computer facilities are available to Summer Sessions students enrolled specified courses; your instructor will let you know if you will be given access to the computer facilities. Two microcomputer facilities are available to Summer Sessions students for general access. The Wheeler Microcomputer Facility, located at 211 Wheeler Hall, has 35 computers. The Evans Microcomputer Facility, located in the basement of Evans Hall, has 60 computers. Both facilities support standard application software and are connected to the campus network and the Internet. Open hours are listed on the Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities website.
