Ten Things to Do NOW

Top 10 Things to Do NOW If You’re Planning to Apply to Travel Study

1. Have your passport ready.

If you don’t have a passport, apply for one immediately. Visit iafdb.travel.state.gov to find the nearest location. If your current passport is set to expire before February 2011, have it renewed. Most countries will not allow you to enter using a passport that is due to expire within 6 months of your arrival.

2. Think about the Travel Study program that would be the best fit for you.

3. Meet with your academic adviser.

Determine whether the coursework you plan to take abroad will fulfill any of your major, minor, or other degree requirements and discuss the difference between taking a class for a letter grade versus passed/not passed.

For UC students: If you will be graduating in Spring 2009 and wish to move your name to the Summer Degree List in order to take advantage of the corresponding lower unit fees (and possibly be eligible for financial aid), it is important that you consult with your academic adviser.

4. Start working on your Statement of Interest.

You will be asked to write a brief Statement of Interest as part of the online application for Travel Study (500 words or less). Brainstorm what you would like to share about your background, interests, and motivation for studying abroad. Include a description of any international experience you have had and an explanation of why you have selected to apply to a particular Travel Study program.

5. Request a copy of your most recent college transcript. (Unofficial version is acceptable).

6. Research financial aid and/or outside funding options.

Last year’s Travel Study programs ranged in price from about $2,450 to $4,620. These fees do not include unit fees, airfare, non-program related transportation, and out-of-pocket, personal expenses. Depending on the program, some or all meals may be included.

7. Read all program policies thoroughly.

It is important to familiarize yourself with important details regarding Travel Study deadlines and refunds before submitting your application.

8. Mark your calendar for February 1, 2010.

This is the date applications are available for the Summer 2010 Travel Study programs.

9. Check back periodically for updated website content.

10. Spread the word!

Talk to friends and classmates who may be interested in joining you for an exciting Travel Study experience this summer – the more, the merrier!
