In this program, students acquire communicative competence in the German language while being sensitized to the relationship between language and culture. Students also explore historical and contemporary aspects of German culture through readings, discussions, guided excursions in Berlin and Weimar, and individual research projects. Topics include multiculturalism and minority experiences, Berlin as divided city and capital, city planning and public discourse, past and present in German architecture, Berlin in popular literature, film and Theater, the art scene in Berlin, and the Weimar classical period.
