The Latin Workshop is a complete, ten-week intensive Latin course for students with no prior Latin experience. A tradition at UC Berkeley for almost forty years, the workshop is a serious commitment: in addition to six hours of class work every day, students are expected to spend several hours daily in study and homework preparation. The class replaces more than two semesters of elementary and intermediate Latin. The first portion of course is devoted to the acquisition of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary through integrated readings; in the second part of the course students choose two out of four options for intensive reading (with commentaries). The workshop is intended to be an intense but pleasant experience in which a diverse group of students at various stages of their education may work and learn together in a friendly atmosphere. Particularly welcome are graduate students from disciplines other than Classics who need to learn Latin quickly for their research and Classics students who have taken courses on ancient culture in translation and want to take the next step, or who want to learn Latin to complement their Greek. Most welcome of all are those with no experience whatsoever in Classics who just think it would be fascinating to learn LatinÑit will be!
