Summer Field Study courses at UC Berkeley get you out of the classroom and into the field.

The following field study courses are offered for Summer 2008:

ANTHROPOLOGY

Field Methods in Archaeology, Honduras

(Anthro 134A - 6 units)
Practical experience in the field study of archaeological sites and materials. Coverage may include reconnaissance, mapping, recording, and excavation.

Field Methods in Archaeology, Japan

(Anthro 134A - 6 units)
Prehistoric Jomon hunter-gatherers in Japan.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Sierra Nevada Ecology

(ESPM 101A - 4 units) Ecology of forests, mountain meadows, montane chaparral, and riparian zones of the Northern Sierra Nevada.

Silviculture

(ESPM 101B - 1 unit) Evaluation of systems for managing forest stands including regeneration, controlling stand density, forest growth, genetics and tree improvement, and prescribed burning.

Forest Measurements, Aerial Photography, and Survey

(ESPM 101C - 2 units) Procedures for measuring the forest resources, introduction to land surveying, aerial photography, timber inventories, and measurement of trees and forest growth.

Timber Resource Utilization

(ESPM 101D - 1 unit) Harvesting and access systems, wood quality, and manufacture of forest products. Visits to industrial operations to evaluate land management practices and utilization operations.

Forest Resource Management

(ESPM 101E - 2 units) An introduction to integrative planning of forest resources.
