Visiting Scholars

Over the years Berkeley Summer Sessions has hosted a number of faculty visitors who accompany groups of students attending one or more of Berkeley's Summer Sessions. We know that many of these faculty members conduct research while on the Berkeley campus and realize that these faculty members could benefit from access to UC Berkeley's academic resources.

Therefore, in recognition of our partner institutions' contribution to UC Berkeley's Summer Sessions, we have created a visiting scholar program for faculty escorting groups of 40 students or more.

Visiting Scholar Program Benefits

  1. A UC Berkeley Cal1 Identification Card.
  2. Access to the University Libraries (Berkeley is one of only 9 repositories for the Library of Congress).
  3. Access to University public computers and networks.
  4. A temporary Berkeley email account.
  5. Sponsorship for a J-1 Short Term Visiting Scholar status during the faculty member's stay assuming eligibility requirements are met and subject to Department of State approval.
  6. Coverage of the $410 J-1 Berkeley International Office recharge fee and the $200 Visiting Scholar Services Fee.
  7. Access to the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF) (for an fee paid directly to RSF)
  8. Discounted passes for Alameda County Public Transportation.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible, candidates for the Berkeley Summer Sessions Visiting Scholars Program should do the following:

  1. Ensure that their program will have at least 40 participants for the relevant summer.
  2. Complete a Visiting Scholar Application Form.
  3. Write a one-page proposal detailing the nature of the scholarship that the faculty member will engage in. This must be submitted to the Director of Berkeley Summer Sessions for consideration no later than March 15, 2010.
  4. At the end of the session, the faculty member must submit a copy or summary of the research conducted or paper written to the Director of Summer Sessions for UC Berkeley records.
  5. Meet eligibility requirements for the J-1 Short Term visiting scholar status and comply with Department of State requirements that the scholar will maintain health insurance coverage during the period of stay in the U.S.

Housing and living expenses are not included in this program so the applicant must demonstrate financial support for living expenses for the duration of stay in the U.S. Participation in the Berkeley Summer Sessions Visiting Scholar program is not guaranteed and is subject to the approval of the Director of Berkeley Summer Sessions, as well as meeting eligibility requirements for the J 1 short term visiting scholar status.
